Graphic Novel Agents: Cartoonist/Comic Books/Creator Resources
on January 17th, 2009The four part graphic novel agent post from the old blog has been moved here and consolidated into one massive post. If you would like to be included on this list or have an update, please contact me. I compiled this list some months back, but I am sure folks have moved on.
I’ve double checked every agent I am listing against the lists at Predators and Editors. Even experienced pros will get some use out of this alphabetical listing of editors, publishers, and agents.
This direct link goes right to the agent page where agents are rated. A dollar sign appears next to their name to show they have actually made sales, and if they have a bad rep or conflict of interest concern, you’ll see it.
You’ll also find handy etiquette tips and guides for submissions.
Everyone who appears on the graphic novel agent list here has a good rep, but remember, you are entirely responsible for doing your own legwork. Listings on the Predators and Editors site can be a little out of date. Note that under the publishers listings, many well-known comics companies are not listed at all. However, the notorious Tightlip Entertainment gets the Not Recommended tag, as well it should.
No matter what, you are ultimately responsible for doing your own research and checking out the reputation of clients.
Before you go on, you need to read this post from nearly four years ago by Neil Gaiman: “Everything you wanted to know about literary agents.”
Some of the links are kaput, so too bad. All of the advice, however, is golden. Please read and bookmark.
You should not even be looking for an agent until you have absorbed the information about what to do before you get one.
I cringe when I see what young newbies have sent to agents and editors. You can blow a gig so easily. Do a little legwork and find out what agents and editors want to see before you contact them.
By the way newbies out there, you do yourself no favor whatsoever by indicating to a potential client that you are amenable to working on spec. Working on spec because you are desperate to get a gig is for people who will spend their entire careers working on spec.
And I highly recommend you take the time to read my posts HERE. VERY BAD PUBLISHERS is a series about my early years in publishing, followed by more recent posts about other bad clients, lousy contract scams, creepy book packagers and more. There’s quite a lot to read. They start out a bit slow, but I guarantee you will find them worthwhile.

Further info direct from Denis Kitchen:
Kitchen, Lind & Associates, LLC specializes in graphic novels and visual books. We represent quite a few young cartoonists and illustrators, three of the more prominent ones currently being:
Eleanor Davis (who just did the cover of Best American Comics 2008, a book for Francoise Mouly’s Toon Books imprint and is finishing up her first long form GN (156 pgs) for Bloomsbury Children’s);
Rebecca Guay (longtime Vertigo illustrator who is working with author Jane Yolen on a painted GN at Dark Horse); and
Todd Hignite whose massive art book on Jaime Hernandez we placed at Abrams (2009).
We also represent earlier generations of cartoonists and authors on comic’s history, such as Jerry Robinson and the Al Capp and Harvey Kurtzman estates, all of whom have book projects in the works or pending. KLA also packages books — we recently completed two for Harry N. Abrams’ new ComicArts imprint: The Art of Harvey Kurtzman and Underground Classics (both Spring 2009 list) with others nearing the green light stage.
Our web site will be updated soon to reflect the latest client additions, but the site will certainly give you an idea of our scope and combined experience.

“Cover Letter
The letter should include author’s name, address, phone number, and email address. It should sum up the plot in a single paragraph, as well as giving the book’s title and word count. If the book is not completely finished, an estimated completion date should be given.
Credentials
The author’s credentials that are pertinent to the book should be listed on a separate page. The list should include previously published books, any short stories that have appeared in an anthology or a magazine, any writing contests or awards won, any employment that has provided experience in the book’s subject, etc. The list should differentiate between how many have actually been published, and by whom.
Synopsis
The synopsis should be two-to-five pages single-spaced and cover the entire book, including the ending to mysteries and thrillers.
Writing Sample
The sample should be the first fifty double-spaced pages, printed single-sided and unbound. Please make sure the pages are numbered.
Response
Due to the enormous volume of materials received, The Literary Group International will only respond to those authors whose work we intend to pursue.
The Literary Group International only considers material submitted on an exclusive basis.
Tips
All writers want their submission to stand out from the others and be noticed. The best way to do this is to make it as professional as possible: Print double-spaced on one side of the page in black ink on 8″ x 11″ white paper with a clear, readable 12 point font, use 1″ margins all around and don’t justify the right margin. Don’t mix fonts or spacing, don’t bind the pages together, and paginate consecutively throughout (not Chapter 2 Page 5). Don’t print out the pages so they look like actual pages in a book. ”

At Elae’s livejournal, she’s listed agents with whom she’s made personal inquiries, so you might want to check her list as well.
I will be giving my lecture on Resources for Creators, which I gave at San Diego Comic Con, again at the New York Comic Con, with updated info. The first 300 people to attend the panel will receive a copy of my short list of essential resources for free.

Hi Colleen,
Nice new blog. And I’m glad you’re reposting the “useful information” items. Can I make one suggestion, though? With really long posts like this one, personally I like the thing where after a paragraph or two there is a “more after the cut” link. I don’t know what the term for that is. “Cut,” I guess. In general, I like cuts.
Your wish is my command. Cut inserted. I can do that from now on, if you prefer.
Good lord, this really IS a heck of a long post!
I’m totally there!
