ACK!!! o_o I’ve seen and read a ton of yaoi, and even write reviews on hard hentai, never seen anything as scary as this page. Emeris face rivals with that of Hannibal Lecter ….
Oh, GOD. Seren’s expression–nightmare fuel.
The thing that bugs me with a lot of yaoi, is it treats sexual assault like it’s a good time. I realize it’s fantasy, but it’s not mine. Can’t deal with it.
Well said, Colleen.
I used to volunteer with a therapy group for sexual molestation survivors. I’ve seen that look of utter shock and anguish on the faces of middle-aged adults, recalling rapes they’d suffered while in their childhood or early teens. That trauma doesn’t fade. Mercifully, the survivor learns to cope.
No wonder why Liana looked so frightened! She know’s what’s happening to Seren and can’t do anything about it.
And are all the Hierarchy sexual predators? Not one somewhat moral person among them? Poor Seren to have grown up constantly with this.
I don’t think I’m giving anything away if I say Eshi is not, Etan (the previous Avatar) was not, and Niniri is not. Niniri would never do this herself, and disapproves. She’s also a classic enabler, and let’s bad things happen. So she may say she disapproves, and might even stop it, but then, might not.
Vinyr would also not personally do this, but he would not personally do anything to stop it.
I’ve met plenty of people who think they’re good people who behave this way.
Yeah. The same people tend to go on about “using common sense” when dressing yourself or doing things like going with a band on their tour bus. -_-
It’s a funny thing though, the things people do while still maintaining they are doing nothing wrong/have a perfect right/are doing to make things better for everyone. It’s one of those things I was really impressed with when reading your comic. It’s a hard thing to make characters realistically evil and not the way most media likes to portray evil as: in simple black and whites.
With Niniri, I think of every mother who knows her child was being molested by the father, and looks away. Or blames the kid.
Every big wig businessman who abuses everyone around him, while all look away, as long as they’re getting something out of it.
I think we’ve all seen it happen, and we’ve all seen the abuser and the enablers justify it, and get away with it.
Niniri is a masterful portrait. She would never do this sort of thing herself, because her self-image requires the appearance of perfection. And yet, she can coldly calculate the consequences and advantages of allowing-by-inaction such abuse. Just as she let Sere mangle Seren, knowing it was one way of controlling him. So I really love those panels where Niniri’s inner ugliness pops out.
But Emeris thrives on being a sadist. There are people like him out there, they just usually mask just how much they enjoy damaging and hurting others.
I don’t like to vent personal issues online, but yes, Gemina13, we learn to cope.
That’s why I found more unsettling this single page, than everything else I have ever read before.
This scene bothers me a lot, too. It looks like the page breakdown for this sequence may go on for as much as two weeks. I’ll understand if people want to skip.
I think at least a fair amount of evil acts (such as torture) are reconciled by those doing it under the heading of (a) “If I don’t do it, someone else will have to, and they’ll do worse than me” (referencing Londo’s character in Babylon 5) or (b) “I know its wrong, but there’s a larger good that it serves, so it is necessary.” I assume Niniri may fall into the latter, if she were asked about this scene. I’d like to think that sheer sadism is fairly rare, but that could just be a “don’t contemplate the abyss too long” blind spot on my part.
and this page is staying up all weekend? Aieeee
I don’t have a problem reading it. I was abused as a kid, but you’re not handling it exploitatively, just with honest brutality. I just hope Seren prevails in the end. (Making him mortal did make me smallface, but that’s my own issues with mortality, so no biggie. At least he’d get to grow old with D’mer if both of them survive.)
I think if Seren does NOT prevail in the end, the state of Virginia will be nuked from orbit. Just sayin’
Arlnee, Arlnee… what about all the innocent and smelly foxes?
Dear D’mer: please arrive at any time and burn Emeris alive…starting with his ***. Sincerely, me.
PS: Make it slow, plzkthx.
