Well, this is a real treat.
An online DJ has created a (legal) mix of Gone to Amerikay’s music. If you’ve seen the graphic novel, you know what an important role music plays in the story. And now you can listen to the soundtrack online, with links to the Itunes store to grab the songs you like best! Thanks to Humoresques for putting together this wonderful selection of music from our book. CLICK HERE. Vintage and modern renditions included! The only drawback: my crap internet service reached bandwidth limit pretty fast.
After an evening of wonderful Irish folk tunes and fantastic jazz, read the liner notes by Derek McCulloch at LargeHearted Boy! Derek wrote a terrific essay on the music of Gone to Amerikay, and it’s meaning to the story.
What a pleasure it has been to sit and listen to these songs all together this evening!

Okay, I went to the site. I liked the song choices BUT some of the performers, like the first one, was not really all that good (too slow and too low), so I tried skipping tracks and it hit me with “you can’t change tracks more than 3 times in 24 hours.” Seriously what? That’s kind of not cool. But cool idea certainly for the mix tape.
Also, laughing at ad to the left of me: “Breed and collect Monster Girls! With big tatas! and no mouths!” okay, yeah, whatev.
I did not get any ads on my iPad but I also found the inability to skip more than 3 tracks über annoying.
I went back and let the list play. I did not have any issue with the volume or the choices of performers. Any list that includes Loreena McKennit and Joan Baez gets two thumbs up from me. The order of the songs actually follows the book and so does some of the choices in performers.
There is one problem with the mix – a half minute silence at the end of ‘Johnny, I hardly knew ye’.
The list is as follows:
Molly Malone – The Dubliners
The Little Beggarman – The High Kings
Barbara Allen – Joan Baez
Frankie And Johnnie – Ethel Waters
The Wind That Shakes The Barley – Loreena McKennitt
Tain’t Nobody’s Bizness If I Do – Dinah Washington
Johnny, I Hardly Knew Ye – Dropkick Murphys
I’ll Be Seeing You – Linda Eder
October Winds – Margie Butler
Strange Fruit – Billie Holiday
The Gentleman Soldier- The Pogues
Roisin The Bow – The Clancy Borthers and Tommy Makem
Thousands Are Sailing -The Pogues
