The graphic novel sale ends tonight! Please check it out! I’ll be shutting down mail order again for about 6 weeks due to my work schedule. So, if you want to get an early start on Christmas shopping, now’s the time!

This is another drawing on the theme of “The Holy Grail” from back in my school days. I touched it up later, and even made a print. I was actually able to buy this artwork back and scan it, so I have a good archive of this one. The art was then resold at a later date. My, am I glad my original art values are going up…

While there are a lot of technical errors in my drawings from back then, these are the kind of works that got me professional jobs while still in high school. Unfortunately, most clients wanted this level of finish on jobs that not only had to be done quickly, but often paid $25 per page or less! Crazy stuff.

The printing standards of the day couldn’t really handle this type of work, either. To draw an early edition of A Distant Soil published from pencil art, I had to completely change my technique to heavy blacks using a very dark, soft ebony pencil. I don’t think the look was entirely successful, and I spent so much time rendering that the technical drawing suffered.

There’s a reason no one does comics this way. Except…I’m doing one this way right now. The new Neil Gaiman book for Dark Horse. Then again, I’m not having to do it at the rate of one page a day…
