I’ve had a couple of graphic novels published and so hear from aspiring creators from time to time. It’s hard to know what they really expect or what to say. Surely not an honest critique; most people react badly to less than total praise and, anyway, my opinion isn’t important. I dislike a lot of things that millions of other people love and I’m not cut out for dream-squashing. Some seem not to believe there’s literally nothing I can do to ease their entry into publishing. I don’t know the secret handshake because there isn’t one. The few instances I thought enough of a person’s work to say “send it to this guy and tell him I sent you” bit me in the butt about half the time so I don’t really do that anymore. I used to feel bad about it, and vaguely responsible. Now I’m just vaguely annoyed, which makes me sad because I do sympathize.

I remember that these were all the mistakes I made when I first started. I was able to buddy up with some known artist and we would critique each others work. I took what they said into account. They emailed the publishers and seen if there were any more spots, if there were, They would let me know to send them my stuff if it was a smaller company. Some of the big boys do take longer to get back to you as far as guidelines go but once your in, your in:)

There is so much of this “get your name out there” hooh hah, that many aspirants spend more time worrying about getting famous than they do about getting good. It’s the Kardashian school of accomplishment.

It works for some people, but if you want to be a creator you have to create things.

If you want to be famous, all you have to do is be a spectacle.
