Great Big A DISTANT SOIL Update

It’s been awhile since I update anything on this page, not because I’ve abandoned the project, but because I often update elsewhere. Most of you are wondering when I’m going to get back to A Distant Soil. Naturally, I thought I’d have it finished by now, but I’d have been stupid not to accept a series of important projects that have been successful and fulfilling on every level, and are helping me to finance the year it is going to take to bring the book home. Currently, I am working on the graphic novel adaptation of Good Omens, the bestselling novel by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. It ended up being the largest comic crowdfunder in Kickstarter history, but is taking a bit longer than I hoped, in part due to my recovery from cancer treatment. You can read about it here. You can also order it in advance HERE. I’m incredibly grateful to be working with the Terry Pratchett estate and Neil on this incredible project, and their support is a heavenly thing indeed. In addition to Good Omens, I’ve worked on several very successful projects with Neil which have enjoyed multiple printings, and some nice awards. I’ve also worked on published prose projects, illustrations, and have been incredibly privileged to have my work in several museum exhibits around the country and the world, including solo exhibits at the Society of Illustrators, The Comic Art Museum, and the San Diego Comic Con Museum. In 2024, I’ll be at Charlotte Heroes Con in June, Galaxy Comic Con in Raliegh in July, DragonCon, and New York Comic Con. While cancer treatment ate up a lot of the funds I was setting aside to work on A Distant Soil, I should have the resources to carve out the time I need to work on it when Good Omens is complete at the end of the summer. I will also finalize a large slate of private commissions that have been hanging fire. The first thing I am going to do when Good Omens is complete is finally learn how to add tones to my line art using a computer art program. Until now I’ve always done it by hand, but it’s no longer practical to do so because the sheets are not only getting harder to come by, and the ones I do have are so old the adhesive has no tack. NEIL GAIMAN’S CHIVALRY and TORI AMOS: LITTLE EARTHQUAKES – 6 Eisner Nominations!

Neil Gaiman’s CHIVALRY, adapted and illustrated by Colleen with letters by Colleen and Todd Klein – and TORI AMOS: LITTLE EARTHQUAKES, an anthology of short story adaptations of the music of Tori Amos featuring works by Colleen, David Mack and others, as well as an alternate cover by Colleen – have both been nominated for the Best Adaptation from Another Medium Eisner Award. Neil Gaiman’s CHIVALRY also scored a lettering nomination for Todd Klein. TORI AMOS: LITTLE EARTHQUAKES was also nominated for Best Anthology, and Best Design with a Short Story nomination for Margaret Atwood and David Mack. Colleen waited 30 years for the chance to adapt CHIVALRY, so this nomination is very special. While all the contenders this year are amazing, the support and votes of our colleagues is most appreciated.

A Distant Soil Restoration

UPDATED 5-5-22 Our printer went bankrupt and discarded our complete inventory of negatives of the art for my entire graphic novel series, nearly 1000 pages of material. While we do have a good deal of the art, restoring the lost pages, and the loss of the negatives has cost me over $20,000 in production work. This was nothing personal, they did this to a number of major publishers. But reprinting all the books and restoring all the art will cost well over $100,000. Snow Glass Apples Wins Bram Stoker Award, Nominated for Two Ringo Awards, and Society of Illustrators Exhibit.

I do most of my posting at my Patreon these days, so I completely forgot to add some cool news here. I am very happy to announce that in addition to the 2020 Eisner Award for Best Adaptation from Another Medium, Neil Gaiman’s Snow Glass Apples has received the Bram Stoker Award for Superior Achievement in a Graphic Novel from the Horror Writers Association. I grant this the Coolest Looking Award Ever Award. And here’s the Eisner. Nice Bookends! It’s surprisingly heavy. I was nominated for Best Penciler/Inker at the Eisners as well, and also received a nomination from the National Cartoonist Society for the Silver Reuben for Best Graphic Novel. Was truly honored by this! We’ve also received a nomination for Best Graphic Novel at the Ringo Awards, and I have been nominated for Best Artist. Professionals may vote until September 23. Original art from Snow, Glass, Apples is featured in the exhibit Women in Comics: Looking Forward, Looking Back at the Society of Illustrators Museum in New York City until October 26. The exhibit features this full wall display of my art from Wonder Woman 750, as well as other art by great creators like Trina Robbins, Nell Brinkley, and Ramona Fradon. I’m thrilled and honored to be a part of this important museum exhibit. I have three graphic novel projects on my plate, as well as a short story, and am financing the finale of A Distant Soil on my Patreon. For obvious reasons, I won’t be traveling for awhile, and I hope to get my general World Events Nerves under control so I can focus on all the beautiful books I am working on. Neil Gaiman’s SNOW, GLASS, APPLES Wins 2020 Eisner Award

I’m very happy to announce that the adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Snow, Glass, Apples which I was honored to do for our publisher Dark Horse Comics has won the 2020 Eisner for Best Adaptation from Another Medium. I was also nominated for the Eisner for Best Penciler/Inker, but I’m extremely grateful for our Adaptation category win. So many great books and creators received nominations, and we are honored to be among them. You can read more about them here. I’m afraid I’ve had to cut back on my mail order operation due to my workload, but you can buy the book at all major bookstores, or ask for it at your local comic shop.
